“We have confirmed that six people died, four women and two men. One of them was a pregnant woman,” a spokesman for the Civil Guard police force told Agence France-Presse. The spokesman asked not to be identified.
Spanish television stations’ broadcast of the race showed the car attempting to speed around a bend but instead going off the tree-lined road in a cloud of dust and plowing into the crowd during the A Coruna Rally.
Cars “go too fast for that kind of road. They are normal roads and people stand on the edge of the bend” to get a better view, the police representative said.
In addition to the six fatalities, about 20 others were injured, the police representative said. Several were taken to a hospital, at least two with “very seriously” injuries.
