There are multiple reasons for this announcement to surprise fans. For one, there hasn’t been any new DLC characters added to Skullgirls since 2014 with Robo Fortune. The other surprise comes with how she didn’t win the character vote when fans got to decide what characters should be DLC for Skullgirls in the future.

Annie not being in Skullgirls ended up becoming a bit of an inside joke and meme for the community. This is even acknowledged in one of the joke characters’ endings where she appears alongside other prospective DLC characters that didn’t make it into the game.
For those unfamiliar with the lore behind Annie, she is known as Annie of the Stars within the world of Skullgirls. Like Filia, Eliza, and Squigly, she is infected with a parasite that helps her in battle. Cursed with being a child forever, she stars in a magical girl television show meant to stop others from searching for the Skullheart.
Annie herself has fought multiple Skullgirls that have existed throughout the game’s history. While she puts on a very light persona while acting on her TV show, she is determined to put down anyone who becomes a Skullgirl. Players will be able to play through her full story if they get her DLC.
Skullgirls is currently available on PC, iOS, Android, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
