In a new interview with GameSpot, Bethesda director Todd Howard announced that both of the company’s recent major titles have still got an incredible number of players booting up daily. Skyrim received a significant boost to its playerbase through the launch of its Special Edition, which allowed new and returning players to start their adventure into the open-world RPG with updated graphics and mod support.

Fallout 4 on the other hand, has been kept current through the use of regular updates and several popular DLC installments, making it Bethesda’s most successful game of all time. In the interview, Howard also discussed what returning to working on Skyrim was like after spending so much time working on the long-awaited next addition to the Fallout series.

Later in the interview, Todd Howard compared the two games, claiming that Skyrim gives the player the option to forge their own stories, creating an adventure for the player that they have more control over. On the other hand, Fallout 4 tells a “stronger but more specific story.”

As for which game is better at certain, individual aspects, the director mentioned that both games have their strengths and weaknesses. Bethesda is reportedly very critical of its own developments, and Howard admitted that the development team feels like they haven’t quite cracked the formula for what makes the best open-world game just yet.

Not to worry though, because the company has a whole host of ideas that they want to explore with future games. And with seven more games in the works currently, Bethesda has a lot of opportunities to wow us over the coming years. Unfortunately for Skyrim fans, it looks like a sixth Elder Scrolls game isn’t set for release any time soon.
