How To Get to Forelhost
For those who decide to collect all the dragon priest masks of Skyrim, Forelhost represents a mandatory point of interest. It is an ancient Nordic ruin situated on a peak southeast of Riften, and in addition to being the home of restless draugr affiliated with the Dragon Cult, it also contains a word wall for a piece of the Storm Call shout.

The recommended minimum level in Skyrim to safely traverse the ruins of Forelhost is 24, and the most reliable way of reaching the location is by leaving Riften through the southern gate, and treading along the eastern road until the player comes across a bridge. Passing through, they will find themselves at a crossroads: left will take them to the Black Briar Lodge, continuing forward will take them to Fort Dawnguard, but turning right will set them on the path to the slopes of Forelhost.
The climb to Forelhost’s courtyard is easy enough, and the player should soon find themselves coming face-to-face with Captain Valmir, an Altmer soldier clad in the armor of whichever faction the Dragonborn chose in the Civil War questline (or escaped with during the incident in Helgen in case they haven’t picked a side yet). He requests their aid in braving the crypts of Forelhost and obtaining the mask of the dragon priest buried there – Rahgot.
What’s Inside Forelhost?
Entering the interior of Forelhost will pit the players against a gauntlet of Skyrim’s draugr and simple puzzles across three areas: the Forelhost Stronghold, Crypt, and Refectory. At the end of the gauntlet, in a large room past a long flight of stairs, the resurrected Rahgot awaits – whose primary attacks are fire-based spells, including summoning a Fire Atronach to his side.
In addition to the powerful mask and staff Rahgot drops, leaving the refectory will place the players upon the battlements of Forelhost next to the Storm Call word wall, teaching them one of the many dragon shouts in Skyrim, an invaluable part of a Dragonborn’s arsenal. Through some meticulous mountain climbing using the Whirlwind Sprint shout, the players can also skip the dungeon entirely if their sole purpose for coming is to obtain Storm Call.
Skyrim is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
