While Skyrim is a rather old and reasonably low-spec game to run on a modern machine, it’s a simple statement of fact that its considerable modding community is always looking for ways to integrate cutting-edge tech into it. DLSS is only the latest in a long line of these technologies, and players will soon have the opportunity to enjoy all the boons that a proper DLSS implementation brings with it.

Nvidia DLSS now supports 200 games and counting, but Skyrim isn’t on that list. Modders PureDark, Ersh, and Doodlez have now taken to correct that wrong, as they’re working on a comprehensive suite of DLSS-led upgrades to the game. According to news posted by Reddit user Mern, the mod is very close to being finished, and it will allow Nvidia users to enjoy more than just a substantive FPS boost, but also features such as DLAA, which is one of the best anti-aliasing techniques currently available.
Many players may consider this type of support in Skyrim to be a source of disappointment, however, since devices such as Steam Deck don’t support DLSS in any way, shape, or form. In other words, non-Nvidia users won’t be able to leverage this impressive technology. Modders, however, have explained that this feature would also enable support for AMD’s universally applicable FSR 2.0 technology, as well as Intel’s own new upsampler, the XeSS.
It may be worth pointing out that the DLSS mod won’t immediately be compatible with a staple visual upgrade for Skyrim called the ENB presets. Mern, however, claims that the creator of the ENB system has agreed to work out the compatibility kinks between DLSS and ENB sometime down the line, which could promise truly massive performance gains for substantially modded Skyrim builds.
Since the upcoming DLSS plugin should eventually be compatible with virtually every contemporary build of the game on PC (including VR versions), this feature may soon be getting added to all the top lists of the most important quality-of-life mods for Skyrim. It remains to be seen how well the end product works, of course, but so far, things are certainly looking up.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim - Anniversary Edition is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
