RELATED: Skyrim: How To Get The Skeleton Key (And What It Does)
Become Ethereal doesn’t affect NPCs, it doesn’t change the world of Skyrim around the player, and it doesn’t summon an ancient Nord Hero from Sovengarde. Instead, it simply makes the player completely invulnerable for a short period of time. It might seem useless, as you can’t attack while protected, but its uses extend far beyond mitigating damage in a fight.
What Does The Become Ethereal Shout Do?
The Become Ethereal shout makes players immune to all types of damage for a few seconds, and the duration of this invulnerability is increased with each new word of the Thu’um learned. At first, players are only in Ethereal Form for 8 seconds total, but this is increased to 13 and then a whopping 18 seconds by the second and third words learned, respectively.
When it comes to getting around Skyrim there’s nothing more tempting than to jump off high cliffs as a shortcut to valley floors far below. With Become Ethereal, this is possible. It’s also perfect for getting out of unwinnable situations, avoiding drowning damage, getting past traps in dungeons and ruins, and can even be paired with Cloak spells for a little bit of damage over its duration.
How To Get The Become Ethereal Shout
Words of Power: Feim / Zii / Gron Word Walls: Found in Ironbind Barrow, Lost Valley Redoubt, and Ustengrav
The word walls for Become Ethereal are located in Ironbind Barrow, Lost Valley Redoubt, and Ustengrav. Ironbind Barrow is a Nordic Ruin west of the Great Lift at Alftland, in the mountains northwest of Windhelm. Lost Valley Redoubt is a Forsworn outpost in The Reach in between Markarth and the city of Falkreath – here, the word wall is actually outside.
The word wall in Ustengrav can only be accessed if the player is on (or has completed) the quest “The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller”. This quest is picked up after meeting the Greybeards for the first time and learning the Whirlwind Spring and Unrelenting Force shouts. The word wall is located behind the pedestal that Delphine stole the horn from.
