However, many of the Dragonborn’s problems can be solved with the right potion, and lack of Magicka is no exception. Though Alchemy can seem tricky at first, players who build this skill can supply themselves with nigh unlimited Magicka to turn themselves into spellcasting powerhouses.

The Fortify Magicka Effect

As with its counterparts for Health and Stamina, Fortify Magicka potions boost the player’s maximum Magicka, providing them with extra points to cast their spells. Naturally, a higher alchemy level means a more potent potion, increasing the Magicka boost.

To raise their alchemy skill, players can purchase training, read skill books, and grind out potions by the dozen. Additionally, if they grow bored of skill farming, gear with the Fortify Alchemy enchantment will increase the effects of crafted motions while worn.

Ingredients

Ingredients are, of course, the building blocks of any potion in Skyrim. Most of the following can be purchased (or stolen) from alchemical merchants and shops throughout the world. However, since several of them can be expensive, some players may choose to track them down and gather their own supply.

Briar Heart: Players can loot these from the corpses of Forsworn Briarhearts. Note that these enemies hit hard, so be careful fighting them. Ectoplasm: There aren’t many natural sources in the game, but players may find this ingredient in houses or in mages’ hideouts, as well as shops. Emperor Parasol Moss: Exclusive to the Dragonborn DLC, this moss grows primarily on the giant mushrooms around Tel Mithryn. Histcarp: Like other fishes, players can find Histcarp in rivers and streams. The Riften Fishery is a good place to look. With the Hearthfire DLC, players who own Windstad Manor can harvest them from a fish hatchery. Jazbay Grapes: One of Skyrim’s harder-to-find ingredients, players can find patches of these near Kynesgrove and near the hot springs south of Windhelm. Red Mountain Flower: These grow plentifully all over Skyrim’s wilderness, especially in the more temperate regions. Salmon Roe: Exclusive to Hearthfire, the easiest way to collect salmon roe is to raise and harvest salmon in the fish hatchery as mentioned above. Players may also find salmon roe by catching salmon that are swimming upstream. Tundra Cotton: These white, tufty plants are common across Skyrim, especially in the plains outside Whiterun. Void Salts: As these are dropped by killed Storm Atronachs, they can be hard to come by. Players may find them in homes or hideouts where mages or alchemists dwell.

Compatible Effects

Since all ingredients in Skyrim have four effects, skilled alchemists can create potions providing multiple buffs. For example, combining Jazbay Grapes and Salmon Roe will increase magicka regeneration speed as a second effect.

Mixing a Briar Heart with either Ectoplasm or Red Mountain Flower creates a potion that not only fortifies Magicka, but restores Magicka as well. However, do not mix the latter two ingredients together — this will activate a Damage Health effect. For an even bigger punch, players can add Glowing Mushrooms to the Briar Heart and Ectoplasm recipe — this will add a Fortify Destruction buff.
