Skyrim was released in 2011 and was a big part of the reason developer Bethesda would garner a reputation for releasing buggy games. Some community members are even preparing pre-release to fix Bethesda’s next game, Starfield. Although fans love the game, so much so that it continues to be among Steam’s most-played games to this day, there was no shortage of bugs in Skyrim. It’s a direct result of the sheer scale of the games that Bethesda develops, where no amount of testing could possibly catch everything that’s broken.

The clip in question is quite short, with the dead Khajiit wagging their tail in Redditor DonTong’s face. The rest of the corpse remains still, as would be expected. The flowing nature of the tail makes it look as if it’s underwater, or operating within another field of gravity to the rest of the game. Other fans had plenty of jokes about the glitch, with many implying that the tail could be hosting the other eight lives of the cat-like Khajiit.

Although it probably wasn’t expected one user actually provided a reason for the glitch’s occurrence. Reddit user Self-Comprehensive said “True answer: it’s actually a piece of non removable animated clothing and the animation does not stop when they die.” It’s interesting that the reasoning for the bug is rather simple, yet over the years was never found and patched by Bethesda. The developer is still releasing updates for Skyrim to this day, though many of the glitches have been patched through community-made mods.

With Skyrim now over a decade old, most glitches that are still being found are relatively harmless. There have been past reports of game-breaking bugs in the Anniversary Edition of the game, though these have mostly been ironed out at this point. The glitches that are still there are a core part of the game’s charm that has kept players engaged all this time. Though players continue to await The Elder Scrolls 6 eagerly, there’s still plenty of life in Skyrim yet, bugs and all.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim - Anniversay Edition is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
