Uploading the add-on to Nexus Mods at the start of the month, user jayserpa has sought to overhaul perhaps one overlooked aspect of Skyrim, sleeping characters and how they react when woken. Ordinarily, when players need to speak to an NPC, when finishing a quest for example, they will rise from their bed slowly and begin a conversation as though they haven’t just been disturbed in the middle of the night.

The “Sleeping Expanded” mod adjusts this to make it more immersive. With it installed, whenever the Dragonborn disrupts someone’s sleep, they will rise a little quicker and smoother, but not without uttering some grumbling sentence about being woken up beforehand. Cleverly, what this mod does is utilize chopped up bits of actual in-game dialogue to create new sentences that contextually fit the attitudes many would have at being disturbed during sleep. One particularly amusing line occurs in an attached video of the mod, in which Jarl Balgruuf the Greater of Whiterun simply mutters, “uuh…what? You! Of course! Great!” in a sort of sarcastic manner.

Not only that, but characters now have a couple of animations when getting up. The default is the one created by jayspera which is less sluggish than in the standard game and looks more realistic. The other is a combat animation, in which suspicious enemies rise from their slumber much quicker to attend to any danger. Sleeping in Skyrim is not a particularly important mechanic, unless players are going for survival mode, but seeing and hearing characters react to being woken up themselves is amusing, yet also adds an element of extra immersion.

This is also not the only somewhat more realistic add-on that jayspera has created. A while back, they uploaded a mod for Skyrim that allows players to pet dogs, which is probably something that many fans have been wanting to do for some time. It goes to show that there are always methods to improving the epic game, and adding a little bit of realism to this fantasy realm can only enhance player’s experiences.

Skyrim: Anniversary Edition was released on November 11, 2021 and is currently available on PC, Playstation 5, Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
