Ever since its original release in 2011, players have been looking for ways to customize their experience in Skyrim. Fans created various mods for the game, adding new romance options, additional items, or even new areas to explore filled with NPCs, quests, and enemies to defeat. While there are plenty of great Skyrim mods to enhance the original gameplay, some of the original features also offer customization options, even if some players weren’t aware they existed.

More than a decade after the original release of Skyrim, a player known as It_is_really_me on Reddit found out about a feature allowing them to change the name of an item. They immediately put this discovery to good use, renaming their Stalhrim mace from the Skyrim Dragonborn DLC into Burny Sanders, a pun using American politician Bernie Sanders’ name and referencing the weapon’s ability to burn their target.
In the comments to this Reddit post, several other Skyrim players were baffled to learn they could rename their gear. Other Reddit users shared the nickname they gave some of their equipment, such as Neck Slits and Chill for a frost dagger or Soul Goodman for a soul trap. Linxdev shared a useful tip with fellow Skyrim players, suggesting they add a space as the first letter of their renamed items to make them appear first in their bags.
Players can rename items without using any mod or console command by opening the Enchanting menu in Skyrim. Upon selecting an item, the option to rename it appears at the bottom of the screen, next to the button to exit the menu or craft the item. The default command on PC is F, which will open the window to input a new name for the enchanted item. Once the desired item has been enchanted, there is no way to change its name, so players should choose it carefully.
Despite being over a decade old, Skyrim still gathers an active fan base, regularly sharing their discoveries or funny bugs they encounter. Some players tackle unusual challenges, such as completing Skyrim VR while lying down or starting a massive brawl between NPCs by dropping cheese in the streets of Riften. While Bethesda hasn’t shared any information about The Elder Scrolls 6, players still find ways to enjoy Skyrim and continue to explore this RPG.
The Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim: Anniversary Edition is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
