Chiefly, the Courier’s existence was a useful mechanic for the Dragonborn to be directed towards the location of an unexplored Word Wall, allowing them to continuously grow their skill in the way of the Voice. On paper, however, the Courier in Skyrim was a ceaseless annoyance that would interrupt the Dragonborn during some of the game’s most important events just to deliver extremely worthless letters. As an essential NPC, Skyrim players couldn’t even take matters into their own hands, and it may well be this quality that skyrockets his reputation into infamy.

No matter where a Dragonborn finds themselves in, no matter the state of the Civil War in Skyrim, the Courier will not stop chasing the player until the letter has been delivered. The nature of his relationship with the Skyrim community has prompted several memes, often comparing the Courier to Jack Nicholson’s character from The Shining. However, it would seem that a player – appropriately named The Good Madness – has somehow managed to escape this curse.

The Good Madness has shared their encounter on the official Skyrim subreddit, uploading a video where the Courier hilariously spawns out of thin air to deliver the message to the Dragonborn. Though the player starts to back away in response, it’s already too late, as the Courier is seen rushing towards their location. Just as the NPC is about to engage the Dragonborn, something miraculous happens – the Courier despawns, vanishing into thin air as unceremoniously as he entered it.

There is no easily-discernible reason why the Courier despawned in those specific circumstances in that specific location. As empowering as it may have felt for the Dragonborn to escape the inescapable, it’s very likely the Courier will simply respawn at a different location once his parameters are met. With The Elder Scrolls 6 in development, players hope that the Redguards have a more sophisticated way to get a message across.
