First released in 2011, Skyrim’s ability to stay relevant into 2023 remains impressive. With the fan community remaining engaged with the game, there’s no end in sight for Skyrim. Due to the extensive mods available for Bethesda’s classic RPG, Skyrim could even maintain a steady player base well after the release of The Elder Scrolls 6. By then, players could be seeing graphics mods that rival the eventual sequel.

In the image posted by Reddit user Double_Volume7210, Faendal lies dead, holding his hand up at the player. It’s unclear how Faendal died, although it speaks to the strength of Skyrim’s dynamic world, that NPCs can put themselves in harm’s way if they’re not careful. It makes the world feel more lived-in and consequential, essential for any RPG. It’s unclear if Faendal’s untimely demise is actually a glitch in-game. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise, as Skyrim is filled with weird NPC glitches. These types of glitches have become a part of Skyrim’s charm, with every launch of the game a new opportunity to find a weird or wonderful bug. It’s inherent in a game of Skyrim’s scale that there would inevitably be plenty of glitches. Luckily, most of the game-breaking issues have been patched out at this point.

Players had fun with the image in the thread, giving it over 1000 upvotes within a day of posting. Redditor Altoidman33 joked, “Sven had enough.” In Skyrim, Faendal and Sven are involved in the quest “A Lovely Letter” together, where they compete for the heart of Camilla Valerius. Skyrim is known for its amazing quests, and “A Lovely Letter” is one of the first that players can encounter in-game, which is why Faendal remains so familiar to many players.

Players still exploring Skyrim to find quirks like this display how fan appetite for more Elder Scrolls content remains extremely strong. While Elder Scrolls Online continues to release DLC to this day, nothing will likely compare to the release of The Elder Scrolls 6. Though it was originally announced in 2018, news on the title has gone quiet as Starfield became Bethesda’s priority. After Bethesda launches its new IP, players can expect the focus of the studio to be back in Tamriel.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
