In the modern gaming lexicon, few games have been able to endure the way the Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim has since it was first released on November 11, 2011, for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Bethesda Softwork’s epic fantasy-RPG was an immediate hit at the time as players explored the northernmost region of Tamriel as the last Dragonborn, a mortal born with the soul of a dragon. The game has since been re-released on following two generations of PlayStation and Xbox platforms, Nintendo Switch, and even a virtual reality port.

A consistent point among Skyrim’s playerbase is the random creations they can bring to life thanks to the game’s detailed character creator, which one player used to bring the aforementioned Morbius to life. Reddit user Madd-Jack shared an image of his version of the Marvel character played by Jared Leto in Skyrim on the game’s subreddit, fittingly titling the post “It’s Morbin Time.”

Jack’s creation is just the latest in the long list of memes surrounding the Morbius film since long before the film released, but have experienced a massive surge in popularity over the last month. The memes were originally born out of the film’s multiple delays due, in part, to issues like reshoots and the COVID-19 pandemic. It didn’t help that Sony never made it clear where the film stood between the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man and Sony’s sub-universe of films building off of the 2018 film, Venom.

Sony looked to capitalize on the film’s ironic meme popularity by re-releasing it in over 1,000 theaters over the first weekend of June 2022. However, it did not go as the studio likely hoped, with Morbius only bringing in roughly $85,000 on June 3, and the re-release effectively bombed. Most film critics credit this to Sony misreading the film’s meme popularity, believing it to be genuine and not ironic.

That said, the internet will do what it does and keep the meme going well after the overall popularity has died out. Jack’s Skyrim creation will serve as just one of several reminders of this period and, maybe, could be enough to cement the film in the long-term alongside ironically popular films like The Room.

Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is currently available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox 350, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
