To find the mysterious note in Skyrim, follow these steps:
Travel to any inn and ask for the latest gossip from the innkeeper until they talk about Aventus Aretino trying to perform the Black Sacrament in Windhelm OR talk to the children in the Honorhall Orphanage in Riften who also talk about Aventus. Talk to Aventus in Windhelm and accept his proposal to start the “Innocence Lost” quest. Go to Honorhall Orphanage and kill Grelod. Wait 24 hours. Go to a city to receive the mysterious note.
What Does the Mysterious Note Mean in Skyrim?
The mysterious note is a covert invitation to The Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim. After receiving it, players should go to sleep in a bed. They will then be kidnapped by a Dark Brotherhood assassin and can choose to join the shady organization or turn down the invitation.
Note that if players choose to reject the invitation, they will lock themselves out of all future Dark Brotherhood quests. For the most rewards, including the special horse Shadowmere, the Ancient Shrouded Armor set, and the Muiri marriage opportunity, it’s highly recommended to find the mysterious note in Skyrim and join the Dark Brotherhood.
